Men's Health Week 2019: Get The Test

Men's Health Week began this week (June 10th -16th). Created back in 2002 with the intention to raise international awareness of health issues in males and to encourage men all around the world to join the conversation.




In support of Men's health week, we have put together a list of the most common UK health issues with men and the tests available in diagnosing these health issues and how to prevent further health problems.




1. Diabetes


Medical Definition



Also known as Diabetes mellitus, is a common disease associated with abnormally high levels of sugar glucose in the blood.

Tests



  • Insulin (fasting plasma glucose test)

  • Diabetes Check (HbA1c)

2. High Cholesterol


Medical Definition



Also known as lipid disorder or hyperlipidaemia, cholesterol is a type of blood fat. High levels of cholesterol in your blood can clog up your arteries – the large blood vessels that carry blood around your body. Over time, this can lead to serious health problems in men.


Key Statistics



Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), the gradual narrowing of coronary arteries, is caused by high cholesterol with over 1.6 million men living with CHD in the UK.



That is the same as Wembley Stadium eighteen times!

Tests


  • Lipid Profile Test

  • Adults aged 40-74 years, living in England are eligible for a free NHS Health Check which includes a blood cholesterol check.

3. High Blood Pressure


Medical Definition



Also know as hypertension, is the restriction to the blood flow in the blood vessels.


Key Statistics



Over 5 million men in the UK have either diagnosed or undiagnosed hypertension or high blood pressure making that 8% of the UK population

Tests


You can have your blood pressure checked at a number of places....


  • Your local GP or at an NHS Health Check appointment.

  • Selected pharmacies.

  • At home with a digital blood pressure monitor.

4. Sexually Transmitted Diseases


Medical Definition



Also known as the abbreviated ‘STD’ or STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) is any of various diseases or infections that can be transmitted by direct sexual contact including; syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and genital herpes.


Key Statistics




In a recent study into the perception of STDs in the UK, 64% of sexually-active men rated themselves as ‘not at all at risk’ of STDs whereas only 5% of men surveyed perceive themselves to be at significant risk for contracting a sexually transmitted disease.

5. Testicular Cancer


Medical Definition



A malignant tumour of the male sex organ (testicle) that normally produces the hormone testosterone


Key Statistics



1% of all cancer diagnosis in men is testicular cancer with nearly 2,300 men diagnosed in the UK every year, over 21,000 diagnosed in Europe and 55,000 globally.

  • AFP Tumour Marker Blood Test

  • Self diagnosis: Checking the testicles for unusual size or weight & for any lumps or swelling
